Going Green: Reusable Straws
The environment impact of human kind has basically pushed us to an ever closer extinction date. We all hear it on the news, we see it through articles, we've been reading about it more than ever. It's not like we can run away from it...although I've been obsessively looking through Youtube and the videos that show off-road campers (yeah right, like I could even afford one!). But the bottomline is we are seriously in deep trouble with all that's been happening and we can't be that blind to not notice the effects of it around us.
So the move for a more sustainable lifestyle has been gaining ground and need I say, becoming the trend. Metal straws became the rage especially after the viral video of a plastic straw being pulled out of a turtle's nose was in everyone's phone. Several cafes moved to metal straws and even pasta straws to save up and show their move. Suddenly, everyone I know had a metal straw or has at least bought a metal straw. Yes, I also got into the hype and bought straws for our own use. Got lucky when a mom friend hoarded metal straws and sold some of them to me. I got to pick great colors too.
My kids have their preference when it comes to straws so I had to buy silicone straws since my youngest had a hard time adjusting to the metal straws and somehow, it was easier to bring as well. I like it when I am just able to chuck it in my bag.

The silicone straws have their own carry-on case with its own brush. It happens to be part of our go-bag but I also like that the kids get to use it from time to time.
I like that whenever we are in a restaurant or fast food joint, the kids gamely ask for their straws without batting an eyelash. Being creatures of habit that they are (they obviously got that from me), they do understand why we have the things that we have and its purpose. And it also helps that they chose the colors and were very excited when they found out that it's all theirs.
It's amazing how much we can actually reuse when we really think closely about it. While single use has its conveniences and I don't think I'm going to remove them from my life, it is quite important to also stress the fact that we can reuse most of the everyday items that we also have. While we live in a consumer-run world, we also have to realize the impact that it has to everyone else, and by that, I do mean the other things living aside from human kind.
